Obituary

Mrs. Mattie V. Coleman, beloved wife of Homer, went to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, December 17, 2017 from Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Mattie Viola Williams was born on November 29, 1937 in Haskell, Oklahoma to the parentage of Edgar Johnston Williams and Cora Berlester Dowdell Williams.  She was the 11th child of 16 siblings.

She was reared in a Christian home and grew up in the fear and admonition of God.  At an early age, she selected God as the head of her life, and united with the Antioch Baptist Church, Morris, Oklahoma under the Pastorage of Reverend Oscar D. Williams, one of her brothers.

Mattie, being a lover of books and knowledge, was always reading and trying to further her education by attending schools that offered her an opportunity to grow in knowledge and wisdom.  Because of early childhood illnesses, she was a year late starting public school;  but because of her quest to excel, she graduated 2 years ahead of her class.  Some of her educational degrees included Practical Nursing, Medical Technology, Certified Phlebotomy and in addition, EKG Technician.  Her chosen profession was the medical field.  Some of her unforgettable experiences included doing an EKC while an emergency open heart bypass was being performed, assisting with autopsies and being elected as President of the International Society for Clinical Laboratory Technology for the State of Texas.

Mattie met and then married her soul mate for life, Homer C. Coleman, Jr., while living in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  They were the parents of four daughters.  Her biggest joys of life were church and family.  After moving to Texas, Mattie united with the Spring Chapel CME Church, where she remained a faithful member until they relocated to Oklahoma.  She loved working in the church and promoted it's programs.  While living in Texas, she held the positions of local officers, such as Director of Board of Christian Education, church secretary, Stewardess, Missionary President, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher and member of other auxiliaries of the local church.  She held offices in the Longview/Marshall District and the East Texas annual Conference.

Mattie loved sharing her knowledge with others, to the extent that she organized the first tutorial classes of Spring Chapel CME Church.  To help those struggling to learn basic skills.  In an effort to help keep records of the families of the community and history of the Church current, Mattie started a library of funeral programs of the deceased members and close family members, church programs and bulletins of morning worship service.

Mattie loved her community family and became involved in several projects to try to help improve the area in which she lived.  Some of them were the AISD PTA, the Blue Birds, the Community Voices, Landowners Association of Texas and Smith County;  where she held offices on the State and Local levels;  "SCORE" Spring Chapel organized rural entrepreneurs, which she named and held offices in as well.

After moving back to Oklahoma, she asked not to be elected to office in the church.  However, she accepted the positions of being the Decor President for the new Church, member of the Womens Board [TAG], Deaconess member and member of the Board of Christian Education.

After "Four-score years" with us on earth, Mattie Viola Williams Coleman made her transition to "Church Triumphant" on Sunday morning, December 17, 2017.  She was preceded in Glory by her grandparents, parents, 4 sisters, 7 brothers, a daughter, grandson, and a host of Aunts, Uncles and other relatives.

She leaves in God's care;  her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, Homer C. Coleman, Jr., of the home in Haskell, Oklahoma;  3 daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and James Gibson, Houston, Texas, Gwendolyn Simmons, Arlington, Texas, Constance and Lorenzo Arnick, Desoto, Texas;  her grandson, Jason D. Simmons; her granddaughters, Roxanne, Jennifer, Shawanna, Sabrina, Savanna and Nikki and grandson-in-law, Eric;  a caravan of great-great grandchildren;  a sister, Bobbie Stones;  3 brothers, Floyd, Maurice and Doc;  a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will cherish the memories of her life.

The Homegoing Celebration for Mrs. Coleman will commence on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the most Holy sanctuary of the First Baptist Church-South, 8150 Highway 16, Beggs, Oklahoma.  Reverend Greg Lewis is the Pastor, Dr. M. M. Williams will officiate and Dr. Floyd W. Williams will render the Eulogy.
