On November 4, 1951, a big bundle of joy, the 3rd of 5 children, was born to Atchielee and Anna Mae [Cummings] Derrick, Sr. They named him Maurice.
Maurice was raised on the family farm in the New Hope Community. He was baptized at the tender age of 8 by the Reverend G. McGill. As a young child, he grew up fishing and hunting. He attended elementary school at New Hope in Oktaha, Oklahoma before graduating from Historic Manual Training High School. Maurice would later build on that foundation to become an expert sharpshooter in the United States Army, where he served his country honorably in Germany.
Mr. Derrick credits his family members and his life on the farm with his ability to "do anything." He knew something about auto mechanics, plumbing, electrical and learned wood-working, which later proved to be the catalyst for him to form his own construction and home repair business.
Maurice was united in marriage to Freida M. Grant Hardaway. Their love was blessed with three sons, Thomas Hardaway, Jr., JahBryn and Grant Derrick, and their other children, Michael, Maurice and Rhondrea. Mr. Derrick made his home in Atlanta, Georgia for the last 27 years. and will be missed by his family and friends.
On July 22, 2016, Maurice Derrick, in his 64 year of life, transitioned from Earth to Everlasting from Marietta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Ann Derrick Brown.
He leaves to cherish his memory; his loving wife of 34 years, Freida, of the home in Marietta, Georgia; his children, Thomas Hardaway, Jr. [Kristian], Grant, JahBryn, Michael, Maurice and Rhondrea; his mother, Anna Mae Derrick; his father, Atchielee Derrick, Sr.; his siblings, Atchielee Derrick, Jr. [Brenda], Darlene Derrick Simmons, all of Muskogee, Oklahoma; Lenart "Glenn" Derrick [Pat], Houston, Texas; along with a caravan of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
