Obituary

Melvin Nathaniel Ryder was born on March 3, 1941 to Nathaniel Ryder and Billie Culton Ryder in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Billie met and married Acey W. Relf on March 15, 1949 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. After the family relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, Melvin attended Dunbar Elementary School and Carver Junior High School. In 1959, he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.

In the mid-sixties, Melvin spent two years in the U.S. Army. He served the majority of his military time in Germany. Melvin specialized in culinary arts while in the Army. At the end of his two years, he was honorably discharged and employed by O'Bannon Manufacturing Company. He was employed briefly with Quality Kleaning Service. Melvin met and married Erma Louise Marzett on May 24, 1969, in Tulsa, OK. To this union, two daughters and one son was born. Melvin owned and operated his own janitorial business, Ryder's Janitorial Service, until he retired. After retirement, Melvin enjoyed spending time fishing with his grandson (Deontray) and brother-in-law (Roy), drawing, sketching caricatures, and making sculptures. He was a natural born artist.

Melvin was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Acey W. and Billie Relf; father and step-mother, Nathaniel and Pat Ryder; grandparents, and great grandson Demontray Ryder. He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving wife Erma L. Ryder; two daughters, Melvon "Honey" Marzett of Oklahoma City, OK and Kimberly "Kim" Ryder of Tulsa, OK; one son Melvin N. "Denny" Ryder Jr. of Tulsa, OK; ten grandchildren, Brittany Marzett of Tulsa, OK, Vernard Marzett of Oklahoma City, Shaunta Ryder, Unique Marzett, Dasha Marzett, Deontray Ryder, Dorian Stevenson, Alan Stevenson, Denzel Stevenson, and Braden Ryder all of Tulsa, OK; four great grandchildren, Da-Coriel Carr, Keymari Brown, Macaiah Ryder, and Marleigh Layn Amir Glover all of Tulsa, OK; two sisters, Edwyna Davis of Broken Arrow, OK, and Kathy Chappel of San Antonio, TX; one brother, Kenny Ryder of Tulsa, OK; sisters-in-law Barbara Jackson and Lillian Jones both of Tulsa, OK; brothers-in-law Roy Marzett and Steve Marzett both of Tulsa, OK; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 1pm Saturday May 9, 2015 in our Tulsa Chapel. Visitation will be Friday May 8, 2015 between 12pm-7pm in our Tulsa Chapel.
