On April 22, 1964, a crying, baby boy was born to Mitchell Hooks and Joyce Lewis. He was the 2nd of 5 Children. Mitchell attended pre-school at DuBois, under the direction of his teacher, Ms. Smith.
Later, he attended Carter G. Woodson High School in Tullahassee, Oklahoma, where John Ford was his Teacher and Superintendent. Mitchell graduated from Wagoner High School with the Class of 1982 and later, attended Oklahoma State Tech in Okmulgee.
Mitchell met the Lord at an early age, and was baptized by Reverend McFrazier at Macedonia Baptist Church in Muskogee.
Mitchell had a true love of people and never met a stranger or declined to help anyone in need. He was always greeting those he knew and loved with a hug and spoken expression of love.
He was united in Holy Matrimony with the love of his life, Mary Ford Hooks, on April 22, 2011. Although their marriage and courtship was brief, Mitchell expressed that his was the happiest he'd ever been in life.
Mitchell closed his eyes for the last time on earth on Saturday, November 12, 2011 in Wagoner, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his father, Mitchell Hooks, Sr., his grandmother, Sylvertia Harris, his brother, Michael Hooks and an uncle, Glyndell Hooks.
He leaves to cherish his memory; his devoted wife, Mary Hooks; three step-children, Octavia, Alexis and Jordan; his mother and step-father, Pat and Joyce Harlin; three sisters, Tyrra [Gary] Shaver, Almetris Hooks, and Patrice Hooks, all of Wagoner, Oklahoma; two step-sisters, Keejuana [Jerald] Harlin and Marie Harlin, all of Wagoner; three brothers, Daniel [Kim] Bates, Wagoner, and Donyell Hooks and Miguel Whitfield, both of Muskogee; two aunts, Hershey Royal, Muskogee and Cynthia Underwood, Tulsa; four uncles, Robert Plummer, Vernon Lee Clayton, both of Muskogee, Doyal Hooks, Oklahoma City, and Kenneth Hooks, Kansas City, Kansas; along with a special friend, Gary Rucker, his second mom, Shirley Evitt-Smitt, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The Final Hour with "Big Mitch" will be on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. in the Union Baptist Church of Wagoner. Reverend James Overton is the gracious host Pastor and Reverend Earl Jones, Officiating.
Burial will follow in the Booker T. Washington Cemetery in Muskogee.
