August, a summer month in Oklahoma with long hot days and sunny skies. While keeping in the spirit of the month, on the 16th day in 1960 a radiant songbird, Phyllis Marie McVay, was born to the loving union of Henry A. and Wilma J. McVay Sr.
Phyllis, a product of a musical family, displayed her lyrical abilities at an early age. Her mother often told the stories of little Phyllis being reprimanded in elementary school for disrupting class with constant singing and humming. Also while being taught piano, little Phyllis' lack of interest during lessons shaped her talent to play by ear, affording us her authentic sound we enjoy to this day.
Fluid with the keys of life, Phyllis' very first singing group was formed at the tender age of thirteen at Alice Robertson (AR) Junior High School with friends Debbie Porter-Morris, Regina Calloway, and Rodslen-King Brown; depending on the day, they called themselves "The Spiritualettes" and/or "The Gospelettes". Phyllis would go on to have a memorable musical career with highlights including the coveted role of Lead Director of the Citywide Youth Choir of Muskogee and was a 2011 Honoree of the Women Who Sing Gospel of Muskogee, OK. Phyllis also traveled with her Aunt Arniece to the National COGIC Conventions in Memphis, TN, and singing in the national choir under the direction of the famed Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. For many years, Phyllis worked with Friendship Baptist Church Annual Women's Day Program under Pastor Louis Tisdale. Phyllis also performed for gospel dignitaries such as Ever Increasing Faith Ministries (California), and AZUSA (Oklahoma). Phyllis always looked forward to serving her community as Musical Director for the Boynton, OK school district annual graduation ceremonies, and lending her talents to countless weddings, funerals, galas, and church musicals across the country.
Phyllis managed to share her fun-loving spirit and zest for life through employment at Funston's Pecan Company, Haskell Care Center, Safe Hands Learning Center, Staff Musician of the esteemed Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors Inc., and ultimately cared for her late mother until her passing. But of all of Phyllis' accolades, accomplishments, and travels, nothing was more rewarding than being mother to Shannon, her first born who shares her high-spirt, and Joe, who shares her birthday.
Spring winds whispered their gentle breezes and the flowers waved their heads to and fro, welcoming Phyllis Marie McVay-Hill into eternity on Thursday night, April 28, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Wilma; parents-in-law, Joe and Kathryn Hill; sister Janet McVay-Whitaker; brother, Jay Williams; sister-in-law, Jane Lewis; brother-in-law, Leonard Hill; and best friend, Bridgette Mason.
