Mr. Porter L. Reed, in his 95th season of life, " crossed Home plate to Heaven " on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Porter LaVare Reed was born in Windom, Texas on January 21, 1923 to the loving parents of John Raymond and Willie Mae [Foster] Reed. The family moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma, where Porter attended Douglas Elementary School and graduated from Historic Manual Training High School.
Mr. Reed served his country in the United States Army from 1942 until 1946. On September 2, 1943, he marreid his love, Miss Gaynell Griffin and they remained married for 72 years until her passing in 2016. From this blessed union, seven children were born: Quinton, LaVare, Lorenzo, Leonard, Paula, Portia and Pamela.
Mr. Porter Reed was a baseball legend and was the oldest surviving Oklahoma Negro League player. Known for his arm and his speed, he played for multiple teams through the 1940's, including the Detroit Wolves, Legion All Stars, Omaha Rockets and the Houston Eagles.
Mr. Reed loved his family and provided for them through his labor as a painter. He loved his grandkids, he loved baseball and he loved Ward Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a longtime member of Ward Chapel, serving the Lord faithfully as a Trustee, President of the Sons of Allen, Sunday School Teacher and Bible Class Teacher.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son, Quinton and LaVare, his daughter, Paula Faye, his grandson, LaVare Renee', his brothers, Alonzo and Cornelious and a sister, Ivy Jo.
Those remaining to cherish his precious memory; his sons, Lorenzo, of Muskogee, Leonard Sr., of Kansas City, Missouri, his daughters, Portia, of Muskogee and Pamela, of Chicago, Illinois; his grandchildren, Derrick [Eunice], Ashley and Rachelle, all of Muskogee, Demetri, of Detroit, Michigan, Amani, Leonard Jr., and Nikia, all of Kansas City, Missouri; his great-grandchildren, Hillary, Moises, Jacent, Braxton, Ashton, Austyn, Tyson, Milani, LaVare, Amiyah, Kenzi and Olivia; a great-great-grandchild, Hazel; his daughters-in-law, Mary Ann, Vicki and Queen Esther; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
