Obituary

Mr. Raymond F. Grey, Sr., after 91 years with us, left this life for a life eternal on Tuesday morning, March 19, 2013 from his home in Okmulgee.

Raymond Grey was born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma on September 28, 1921 to Robert George and Earlene [Foshee] Gray. He was the second of three sons in the family. After graduating from high school, Raymond attended Greeley Teachers College in Greeley, Colorado. He completed 3 years at Greely before volunteering for the United States Army. Raymond proudly served his country during WWII while stationed in the Philippines and Italy.

After his honorable service, he returned to Greely to complete his education. His first and only teaching assignment was in the Okmulgee Public School system, where he would remain for the next 36 years. Raymond later earned a Masters of Industrial Arts from Oklahoma State University.

He touched many lived through teaching Math, Shop [Industrial Arts] and Drivers Education. and through his participation with a young men's organization called Hi-Y. Even after retirement, Raymond was often approached by former students who fondly recalled his years at Historic Dunbar High School and Okmulgee High School. Mr. Grey also drove the School Bus and was the Director of the Eastside Swimming Pool. He was active in Civic associations, including the Okmulgee County Election Board and was recognized for his efforts in Blood Drives and donating blood.

Shortly after coming to Okmulgee, Raymond met and married Barbara Davis. They were the proud parents of Raymond, Jr., and Carole. Raymond was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, and a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Family was very important to him and he made every effort to be present for graduations, weddings and gatherings of his extended family.

Mr. Grey was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a grandchild.

He leaves to honor his memory; his wife of 64 years, Barbara; his son, Raymond, Jr.; his daughter, Carole [Herman] Ray; a brother, Irving [Carmela] Gray, El Paso, Texas; sisters-in-law, Imogene Gray, Scottsdale, Arizona and Clairetha Davis, Los Angeles, California; his grandchildren, Gina Gray, Shelley [Chad] Collins, Lindsey Gray, Kyle [Magaly] Ray and Brandon Gray; five great-grandchildren, nephews, Irviing Jr., Bill and Bob, nieces, Carmen and Eileen and 3 generations of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 25, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the Uganda Martyrs Catholic Church. Father Michael Knipe and Father Khiet Nguyen will be Con-Celebrants.

A Rosary will be held on Sunday evening, March 24, 2013 at 6:30 PM in the Chapel of Peace at the funeral home. Friends are welcome to share remarks during this time. The family will be present to receive visitors beginning at 5:30 PM

The Christian committal will follow the Mass on Monday in the Okmulgee Cemetery.
