His Story
Reuben Dale Lewis, Sr. was the second son born to Clarence and Roxanna Workman-Lewis. He was born on October 20, 1946 in Eagletown, Oklahoma. After growing up in Eagletown, the family moved to Broken Bow, Oklahoma, where he graduated from Dunbar High School in 1964. He attended Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma. He became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. on the ship of Sewel Soul Saints in 1965. Reuben also played basketball, and graduated with a B.S. Degree in 1968. His career began in education in Tulsa Public Schools in August of 1968, and continued until his passing. He taught a variety of subjects, but enjoyed Science and Math the most. He continued his education over the years by obtaining two degrees: one from Northeastern State University in 1975, and the other from Southern Nazarene University in 2003. He also spent 18 years as the assistant basketball coach at McClain High School.
He married Margaret Gift in 1973, and their only son, Reuben Lewis, Jr. was born that same year. A year later, the marriage dissolved. In March of 1980, he and Rose Minter were married. They began their marriage as a blended family with her three children, SuMeko, Dawn Yail, and Brian, and his son, Reuben, Jr. All children were raised in their home. After his marriage to Rose, he joined The Church of the Living God, Reading Street and remained a member in good standing under the leadership of Bishop Thomas Smith, Jr., until his passing. While there it was his pleasure to work with the Sunday School Department, as the assistant superintendent as well as one of the senior high teachers. He was instrumental in helping to create the Church of The Living God Learning Center, where students from all over the community attended during the summer. He also enjoyed singing in the choir. His personal time at home was spent landscaping his lawn, enjoying "his space," his coveted media room watching sports. He loved the security of his home life with his wife Rose and their beloved pooch, Koby.
Both parents, one sister, and two brothers preceded him in death.
