IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Reverend Devoy
Hill, Jr.
March 31, 1942 – March 21, 2014
On March 31,1942 the only boy of 5 was born to Ruby and Devoy Hill Sr in Idabell, OK. Naturally, they named him Devoy Jr. Devoy was a smart boy but very adventurous to say the least. He accepted Christ at a young age and was a member of Rayfield Baptist Church early on.
He served briefly in the Air Force and obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Northeastern University in Talequah, OK. He was a Speech Therapist for many years and was featured in Jet Magazine for being one of the only African American Speech Therapists in the state of Kansas. Devoy taught Special Education for over 25 years in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri.
In 1983, after a year of 'running' he was called to preach the gospel. He pastored at Wilson Chapel in Haskell, OK and Union Baptist Wagoner, OK.
In 1969, Devoy married ElVerna Grayson in Muskogee, OK and remained a devoted couple until her death in 2010. It's no secret Rev. Hill had a passion for children. He and his wife fostered for over 35 years. Many people young and old still affectionately refer to him as POPS, or PAPPA HILL.
On March 21, 2014 he left this earth after a short battle with lung cancer and received his complete healing, along with his wings. Because of his faith we are rest assured that he is sitting at the feet of Jesus. He is preceeded in death by his parents, sister Linda Diane, son Devoy Hill III, and his loving wife of 40 years, ElVerna.
His legacy lives on through his children. Pamela Thomas (Arthur Sr.), Catherine McIntosh (Michael), Kenneth Collins, Sherry Lee (Nathanial Jr.), YoLynda Scott (Donald Jr.), Michael Hill, Johnny Carter, Ladasha Hill, Marquitta Hill, and Demetrius Hill.
