Deacon Roy J. Brown

Life Reflections

De acon Roy J. Brown was born on October 24, 1939 in Tylertown Ms. He was one of seven children born to Ms. Nurcelia "Mama Nurt" Brown. He was preceded in death by his mother; his brothers Otis and Willie J.; and his sisters Ida Mae (Mickie), Perlie Aviva, Dorothy and Willie Mae.

Roy grew up in Franklinton, Louisiana.  While in Franklinton, he was a member of Magee Temple Church of God in Christ.  He attended Washington Parish High School in Franklinton.  Roy was the captain of his high school football team. Under his leadership he and his teammates lead their school to the state championship. In his senior year in high school, Roy wrestled a bear and won.  The circus was in town that year and they asked the football team who would like to wrestle a baby bear.  The team volunteered Roy since he was the team captain.   After high school, Roy moved to New Orleans, Louisiana to attend Southern University.

While Roy was in New Orleans, he had a chance meeting with the woman who would become his soul mate.  One Saturday morning Roy was at the bus stop and so was Esther Mae Turner.  Roy started a conversation with Esther.  Esther did not know Roy, but she knew his family, so she asked about his family.  However, Roy had other things on his mind.  When he saw Esther, he knew she would be his wife. When Roy got home, he asked his uncle, Joe Brown, to ask Esther if he could have a date with her on Sunday. He picked her up that Sunday and they have been eating dinner together for more than 60 years.  Roy and Esther were married over 60 years and they are the parents of 5 children.

Roy began his career as a longshoreman on the riverfront in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1962.  After two years he was promoted to foreman and oversaw supervising sixteen men. He was a full member of the International Labor Association (ILA).  Roy was also in charge of the Grain Elevator in Myrtle Grove, Louisiana.  Roy retired from the Longshoreman in the late 1980's.

In June of 2000, Roy joined the Love Outreach Family Ministries, under the leadership of his son, Pastor Rudelle Israel Brown.  Roy was quickly appointed to the office of a Deacon and served faithfully in every aspect of the position.  He was always the first person at the church.  Pastor Brown knew Deacon Brown would be at church to make sure the doors were opened on time.  Deacon Brown loved traveling with the church when Pastor or one of the Elders had outside speaking engagements.  He was a faithful supporter and a man that always prayed.

Deacon Brown and his family lived in New Orleans until 2005, the year of Hurricane Katrine.  After the hurricane, Deacon Brown and his family moved the Tulsa, Oklahoma.  He continued with the Love Outreach Ministries and was faithful until the day of his transition.

Deacon Brown had a very unusual departure.  The nurse said she had never seen anything like it, and that it was very spiritual. He was very weak at the end but suddenly gained strength.   He raised up slightly from his bed and lifted both hands toward heaven like he was praising God and his eyes were wide opened. He appeared to be gazing at something above him.  Those in his hospital room noticed the phenomena and began to look but did not see anything.  Deacon Brown took his last breath, lowered his arms, and went into eternal rest surrounded by his wife Esther, his daughter Kim and his son-in-law, Deacon Palmer.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Esther Turner Brown, his children, Gary Brown (Addie), Kim Brown Benson (Danny), Rudelle Israel Brown (Terry), Roy K. Brown (Keyah) and Tiffany Brown-Palmer (William); Eleven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many others who loved him dearly.
