Obituary

On January 15, 1920, a precious, baby boy was born to Henry and Sarah [Ball] Sallis in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.  They named him Ruben and he was one of 15 children in the family.
Ruben grew up in Fort Gibson and attended Nero School until the 8th grade, when he quit to help his father on the family farm.  In April of 1942, Ruben enlisted in the United States Army and served his country honorably during World War II.  while serving, Ruben was a Material Warrant Officer.  He received his honorable discharge in 1945 from Camp Walters, Texas.
After his service to his country, he returned to Oklahoma, where he worked at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center until his retirement in the early 1970's.  Ruben met Viola Mayfield and after falling in love, they were united in holy matrimony on September 11, 1948.  Together, Ruben and Viola made their home in Fort Gibson.  They raised their 4 boys on 4 Mile Road and cherished 63 years together until God called Ruben's beloved wife home.
As a child, Ruben rode horses.  He had an old gray mare that he loved to ride.  He played rag ball [a ball made of socks].  He would sometimes walk 5-6 miles just to hear the radio.  He loved to watch Western movies and Gray's Anatomy.  You could often find Ruben in the woods.  He hunted rabbits, coons and squirrels and enjoyed fishing.  His favorite fish to eat was perch.
Ruben attended Four Mile Branch Baptist Church for many years.  He was a devoted member until his health started failing.  He was a Deacon and the oldest member of the Church.  He considered his church family a part of his family.
After 98 years of life, Deacon Ruben Sallis transitioned from his home here on Earth to his Eternal home.  He received the ultimate healing and there is no more sickness nor pain.  Those awaiting him with open arms in Glory;  his Heavenly Father, his beloved wife, Viola, his youngest son, Danny, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, his daughter-in-law, Chylene Sallis, his Mother, his Father, and all of his brothers and sisters.
Those remaining on this side of Heaven;  three sons, Cephus Calvin [Susie] Sallis, Ruben Sallis, Jr., and Sylvester [Lillie] Sallis and daughter-in-law, TeJuana Sallis;  his brother-in-law, Leon [Jean] Mayfield;  his grandchildren, Kacey [Josh] Henry, James Sallis, Carlos McClellan, Ruben III and Byron Sallis, Sean Sallis, Shaleah [Carlos] Marshall, Dannita [James] Evans and Christopher Sallis;  twelve great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a caravan of other family members, church family and friends.

The Sacred Farewell to Deacon Sallis will be on Monday, October 29, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. in the Timothy Baptist Church.  Pastor Kelly Payne is the gracious host, Pastor Walter Brown, Jr., will officiate and Pastor Terry Kirts, Pastor of Four Mile Branch Baptist Church will render the Eulogy.

Burial will follow in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery at 1:00 PM.
