Mrs. Ruby L. Davis, after 103 years on Earth, now rests with her Savior in Glory.
Ruby Lee McIntyre was born September 1, 1911 to the late Johnnie Henrietta "Etta" and Perry Lawson McIntire at the residence of 1505 Wewoka St. in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She was the ninth of eleven children, all of which have preceded her in death, except Imogene O. McIntyre - Cole of Dallas, Texas. Coming from a strong Christian family, Ruby was encouraged by her parents to pursue Christ.
She attended Dunbar Elementary, Sadler Jr. High and The Historic Manual Training High School, class of 1932 in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
1932 would become a milestone year for Ruby. On May, 5, 1932 Ruby Lee McIntyre married Howard Hilliard Gray at the age of 19, in Wagoner, Oklahoma. That same month, she was baptized at the 18th & Denison Church of Christ, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. One of her first task as Christian wife was to lead her husband, H. H. Gray to Christ. H. H. was baptized into the Church that December, 1932.
Within one year they would become deeply involved in ministry. H.H. gave his first sermon in Haskell, Oklahoma. The couple would soon adopt a passion for "planting seeds" in Churches. In 1934, together they would minister for 4 ½ yrs at the Church in Atoka, Oklahoma until they relocated in 1939, to Dallas, Texas where they found the Lawrence and Marder Church of Christ. This Church quickly expanded in membership to over 500 members and is still serving God to this day. Ruby taught Sunday school and served diligently in many capacities. Many of her students went on to become ministers of the gospel.
From 1945 to 1952, the Grays owned the Bargain Realtor Company, the largest Black Realtor business in Dallas, Texas.
H. H. Gray preceded her in death. To this union no children were born.
Her mission was to serve the Lord and continue to do so by teaching Sunday school and assisting in taking care of the congregations sick and elderly. She could best be described as a caretaker, receiving a nursing aide education from the Practical Care Institute of Los Angeles, California in 1969.
In 1970, Ruby retired from the Security Pacific National Bank Los Angeles, CA, but would continue with her mission to take care of others by working as a doctor assistant to Dr. Roy Cooley, in Pontiac, Michigan. She then met and married Hulon Davis on May 2, 1975 in Pontiac, Michigan.
After marrying Hulon , Ruby decided to return back to her roots in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where she would once again begin to worship at the 18th & Denison Church of Christ.
The two would become very active in several churches and Community Services. They were long time volunteers at the V. A. Medical Center, State Commander and Secretary for the American Legion Batfish Post #241 and foundering Members of Muskogee Church of Christ.
On September 17th, 2002 Hulon Davis preceded her in death. After her husband's death, Ruby Davis moved to Country Garden Estates Assistant living center in Muskogee, Oklahoma. In August 2006, she relocated to Eastgate Village Nursing home, where she would remain until her going home, Good Friday, April 5th, 2015.
Ruby was a quiet, serious, sweet and industrious woman. She was strong, spiritually, mentally and physical. Her hobbies were cooking, arts & craft, sewing, gardening, reading traveling reading her bible cover to cover. She was known as a "professional Hat Millinery" and very well sought out for her fashion and hat collection. She was always faithful in attending church, and a God fearing-woman.
On Sunday, September 4, 2011 Ruby was named a Centenarian and featured in the Muskogee Phoenix newspaper, "I'm Proud to an Okie from Muskogee" noting her love for God and all around service for countless people and communities.
Although, Ruby never had any children of her own, her greatest Love was children. She was the care taker for many of her nieces and nephews, and would hold the title of the "Mother Aunt" to the entire family. She maintained a "Mother' close relationship with her nieces, and her great, great-niece Morgan-Dior Knowles.
Ruby leaves to celebrate her life and legacy, one sister, Imogene O. McIntyre Cole of Dallas, Texas, five nieces; Leontine Silvers Hammer, Zeporia Hughes of Oakland, CA, Margaret Taylor(Elijah Michael) of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Sheryl Dudley of Dallas, Texas, Jacqueline Spencer (Kenneth) of Detroit, Michigan. Four nephews; Joseph Hughes, Vallejo, CA, Bernard J. McIntyre, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Perry L. Cole(Tyrza) of Dallas Texas, Leon Scroggins (Beverly) of Kansas City, Kansas ,and Robert L Scroggins (Janet) of Lexington, Kentucky, and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, church family and friends. Her parents, Johnnie Henrietta "Etta " and Perry Lawson McIntire ,five sisters; Veola Elaine McIntyre Hughes, Myrtle Easter Adeline McIntyre, Josey Jemison, Jesse Mae McIntyre McIntosh, Odessa Laverne McIntosh Morris, and two brothers; Percy McIntire, and Booker Talaffaro McIntyre all proceeded her in death
The Sacred Farewell for Mrs. Davis will be on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. in the Muskogee Church of Christ. Brother Michael Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at 12 Noon in the National Cemetery at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.
