On a chilly February 18, 1938, a beautiful, baby girl was born in Taft, Oklahoma from the loving union of Reverend Talmadge Maxwell, Sr., and Millie B. Graves Johns. Their new joy was named Ruth Evelyn and she was the fifth of eight children in the family.
Ruth accepted the Lord into her life at an early age. She attended school in Taft, where she graduated from Moton High School. Ruth continued her education at Connors State College.
Ruth became a member of the First Baptist Church in Taft, Oklahoma, where she met and later married Pastor Woodrow McBride, Sr., and took an active role in the Church. She served the Lord faithfully as President of the Choir for many years, as a youth Sunday School teacher and she also started the play "Old Ship of Zion."
Sister Ruth wrote poems, plays, and participated in community activities too numerous to list. She was a foster parent and grandparent and loved to sing, speak at various other Churches and organizations and was a fervent prayer warrior, mother, grandmother, cook and loyal friend.
Mrs. McBride provided for her family through her employment with the State of Oklahoma for over twenty-three years, in the Department of Corrections, and then remained active as a dorm mother and operator at Connors State College in Warner, Oklahoma until her final retirement.
On Saturday morning, September 13, 2014, Ruth Evelyn McBride, after 76 seasons of life, her time with us on earth came to a close. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, two brothers and two sisters.
She leaves in God's care to cherish her fond memories; her children, Donna [Cornell] Sims, Coweta, Oklahoma, Lonnie [Rita] Porter, Neosho, Missouri, Larry Hodge, Tulsa, Oklahoma and Hazel [Baron] Prevost, Sr., Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dollie Melville, Mill Valley, California, Esther Maxwell, Tulsa, Oklahoma and Jerrie [ Bishop J.C.] Washington, Clarksville, Texas; and a caravan of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
