Obituary

In the summer of June 30, 1923, a baby boy was born to Joe and Cora Dindy Burks in Clearview, Oklahoma. His parents named him Sammie Ed Calvert, but his nephews and nieces, called him "Uncle Ed" and his cousins called him "Daddy Boots.

Sammie accepted Christ into his life at an early age. He served the Lord faithfully, serving as Custodian at Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church during the 1960's, also sang in the Male Chorus, served as a Deacon, Trustee and Usher for over fifty years; his love of the Lord and working in the Church obvious.

Sammie matriculated thru Clearview Schools, where he grew up a happy man. He later enlisted in the United States Army, where he served his Country honorably during World War II.

He settled in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he met a lovely young lady, Queen Esther Roberson, and after falling in love, he made her his wife of Fifty Seven Years. Their loved was blessed with four children, Deryle Sonny, Barbara, Lamar, Quaneich and they also raised a grandson, Marquis and great-granddaughter, Marquisha Sims.

Mr. Burks was employed in the Restaurant business as a Culinary Cook. He was then employed with Tulsa Public Schools as Maintenance Supervisor at Booker T. Washington High School, where he took care of the Field House and S.E. Williams Stadium.

Mr. Burks closed his eyes on Earth, but woke up in Glory on Thursday, February 18, 2010 in Tulsa. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, three sisters, a brother, daughter, grandson and a granddaughter.

He leaves to cherish his special memories; his devoted wife, Queen Esther; his sons, Deryle Sonny, Lamar [Jac], his daughter, Barbara; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and one adopted great-grandchild; a nephew, Charles Burks; three sisters-in-law, Hazel Watts, Nashville, Tennessee, Flora Sheppard, Richmond, California and Kathryn Reagans, New York; along with a caravan of nieces, nephews, cousins and a good friend, John A. Pitts.

The final salute to Mr. Burks will be on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. in the Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church. Reverend Robert Calvert, Pastor, Officiating.

Burial will follow, with Military Honors in the Rolling Oaks Cemetery on East 91st in Tulsa.
