The loving union of Moses and Mattie Neal Johnson was blessed with four children, one of which was a baby girl. This daughter, who happened to be the youngest, arrived in Galveston, Texas on March 12, 1926 and they named her Sarah.
Sarah, along with her brothers were reared by their maternal grandparents, however, afterthe death of their parents in 1926. When Sarah's grandfather died in 1935, her grandmother, and "namesake, Sarah Beckton", moved the family from Texas to Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Upon arriving in Okmulgee, they united with Macedonia Baptist Church.
Sarah would often speak with tremendous pride of the love and respect she had for her grandmother. She lovingly referred to "Mama Beck" as " The Strong Independent Woman sho sacrificed much to raise us."
World War II caused dramatic changes in Sarah's life. When all three of her brothers went off to war, she deferred her dream of going to nursing school to begining working full time and caring for her aging grandmother.
In 1944, Sarah met and married the love of her life, a handsome soldier by the name of Arnold "Leggs" Glenn. Their love was blessed with three children; Norma Helen, Arnold Jr., and Anna Flave. Sarah moved her membership to Eastside Baptist Church, where her husband's family was actively involved. Her membership spanned over six decades.
When her youngest child began school, she returned to school as well, but surprisingly not to study nursing. Sarah had been inspired by the success story of Madame C. J. Walker, the first black female millionare. The family temporarily relocated to Kansas City, where she enrolled in teh Madame C. J. Walker School of Cosmotology. After her graduation, she returned to Okmulgee and opened "Sarah's Beauty Shop." She operated her business for over 40 years.
Mrs. Glenn was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother "Ya Ya." After "fourscore and two years" Sarah Johnson Glenn moved her membership from Eastside Baptist Church to "Church Triumphant" on Monday morning, July 21, 2008, from the loving comfort of her daughter's home in Houston, Texas. She was preceded in death by her Husband of 45 years, Arnold Glenn, Sr., her son, Arnold Glenn, Jr., and her grandson, Adam Glen James.
When her health began to fail two years ago, she returned to her Texas roots, allowing her to spend precious time with her two daughters, Norma and Anna, and her daughter-in-law, Jan. She also cherished sharing much oral family history with her grandson, Anthony David James and great-grandchildren, Halaya and A. J. She also leaves other relatives and friends who will always cherish her precious memory.
The final hour with Mrs. Glenn will be on Friday, July 25, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. in the Eastside Baptist Church. Rev. Eddie Davis, Sr., Pastor will officiate and Rev. Larry H. Smith, Sr., Pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church of Muskogee, will give the Eulogy.
The Christian Committal will follow in the Okmulgee Cemetery.
