During the summer of 1925, just five days after Independence Holiday Celebrations, a celebration took place for Wesley and Mamie [Williams] Jackson. The family celebrated the birth of their second of eleven children in Brenham, Texas on July 9 and they named their new son Sherman Jackson.
Better known to close friends and family as "Drifter" or "Colt 45", Mr. Jackson joined the United States Army in 1943, serving his country honorably during World War II.
Sherman became a member and also a deacon of Hope Lutheran Church later in life. He worked as an automobile mechanic for Fred Lowrance Auto Repair, Bill Bull Chrysler and also Auto Oasis before his retirement. After retirement, he began a hobby of walking and picking up cans for a past-time.
On June 4, 1976, Sherman married the love of his life, Pearlene Johnson and their loving union was blessed with three children.
After 83 seasons, on August 30, 2008, Sherman Jackson heard "His Father's Voice" and joined his Lord Jesus Christ in Heaven. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Mamie Jackson, four brothers, John, Arvin, Vernon and Rayford Jackson, a sister, Ozell Mosley and a son, Brian Jackson.
His family left to celebrate his home-going; his loving and devoted wife, Pearlene Jackson, of the home in Muskogee; a daughter, Allene Jackson [Robert], Tulsa, Oklahoma; a son, DeAndre Jackson [Emtecia], Muskogee, Oklahoma; two brothers, Clinton and Margie Jackson, and James Jackson, all of Grand Prarie, Texas; two sisters, Bernice Bell, Browsville, Texas and Brenda Joyce Bush, Grand Prarie, Texas; six grandchildren; along with a host of other relatives and freinds.
The final salute will be on Friday, September 5, 2008 at 12 Noon, Graveside ceremony in the National Cemetery at Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma. Friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 and the funeral cortege will depart at 11:30 to the cemetery. The casket will not be opened at the cemetery.
