On February 15, 1963, a beautiful, baby girl was born from the union of Thomas and Dorothy [Roberts] Dean, Sr., in Muskogee, Oklahoma. They named their precious gift Shirlene Elizabeth Dean.
Shirlene, affectionately referred to as “Shirl”, was a lifelong resident of Muskogee, where she grew up and also attended Muskogee Public School, ultimately graduating from Muskogee High School with the illustrious Class of 1981.
At an impressionable young age, Shirl accepted Christ into her heart at her family church, Deans Chapel Baptist Church. During her life, Shirl held many vocations, with her position as a Nurse Aid being the job she enjoyed the most. It allowed her to help others and bring smiles to those who needed it the most.
She met and later married Andrew Cartwright and from their union came a beautiful baby girl, whom they named Crystal Jenee’ Cartwright September 8, 1983. They later divorced.
Later in life, she married Tonny McBride and from this union, a precious baby girl they named Tonny Briana McBride.
Shirlene was a loving mother, daughter, loyal sister to her siblings, aunt and friend. She loved and enjoyed family, music, dancing, gardening, movies and shopping. She had a heart of gold and was loved and cherished by many.
In her 63rd year with us, Shirlene Elizabeth McBride “dozed into the perfect peace of eternal slumber” on Tuesday evening, March 3, 2026 from St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Dorothy Dean, Sr., her brother, Thomas Dean, Jr., her sister, Darlene Coleman, and her nephew, Jody Dean, Sr.
Shirl leaves beautiful memories embedded in the hearts of her loving daughters, Crystal Cartwright and Tonny McBride, both of Muskogee; five grandchildren, Keoindray Ragsdale, Jr., Ka’Myah McBride, Denzel Newton, Faith Martin and Jazzara Cartwright; three sisters, Sheila Fields, Linda [Tyrone] Brooks, all of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Debra [Ollie] Brooks, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; a brother, Tommy Dean, Sr., Muskogee; two special friends, Carla Moore and Donna Anderson; along with a caravan of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
A time to reflect on the life of Ms. Shirlene Elizabeth McBride will commence Friday, March 13, 2026 at Two hours past Noon in the most holy sanctuary of the Deans Chapel Baptist Church. The Pastor, Reverend Michael Ragsdale will Preside. Burial will follow in the Booker T. Washington Cemetery in Muskogee.
