Obituary

On a picturesque sunny day in Pierce, OK, David Brown Davis and Elizabeth (Goudeau) Davis celebrated the birth of a beautiful baby girl they named Suzy. Suzy was delivered by her grandmother, Mary Deere who was a mid-wife. While the month was known, the exact date of birth was not recorded, so at a later date Suzy chose the date of July 8th 1940 as her official date of birth.

When she was a young girl Suzy's parents moved from Pierce, OK to Muskogee, OK where she attended school in the segregated public-school system. During her formative education Suzy attained academic excellence from grade school throughout her collegiate years. She was well loved and respected by her peers and throughout the teaching community. She was voted Miss Manual 1958 and graduated from Manual Training High School the same year.

Suzy had a passion for God at an early age. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized. One of the earliest churches of which she was an active member was Cumberland Presbyterian Church where Reverend Samuel A. Nelson was her pastor. Suzy was known as a "PRAYER WARRIOR", a fact that many can attest. She availed herself to answering the request to pray for family, friends and even strangers who were in need of the peace the Lord provides regarding their situation. She was always available to help lead the lost to accept the Lord as their Savior. She would say, "Repeat after me..." and the prayer of supplication would begin. That was her purpose in life. Her current membership was with Berean 7th Day Adventist in Muskogee, where Dr. J.M. Phipps, Jr. is the Pastor. She was also a faithful supporter of Harvest Ministries Church in Muskogee.

One afternoon in 1960 while Suzy was working as a waitress at Leo's Diner, in Muskogee, two brothers came in to eat – One was an Army Soldier and the other was an Airforce Airmen. Suzy conversed with the brothers while serving their meals. That evening the Airmen returned and asked her if he could escort her home. His name was George E. Morris. George and Suzy continued to court, it was a beautiful love story which resulted in their marriage on December 30, 1960. As the wife of an Airmen Suzy had the opportunity to the travel world. During their marriage they were blessed with 4 fabulous daughters, who ALL exhibited their mother's exquisite traits: beauty, intelligence, faith and fortitude. The marriage later dissolved, after which Suzy focused her attention to God and her children.

Suzy attended Muskogee Junior College earning the credits necessary to transfer to the University of Oklahoma where she earned her Bachelors of Education degree in 1968. During the transition of the United States from a system of segregation to integration, Suzy was the first Native American/African American teacher in the Midwest City school system in 1969. She taught 1st grade at Townsend Elementary and was credited with being able to reach students that others could not. She had a gift for students with special needs before the term was even coined. Teaching during that period of time was extremely challenging but Suzy persevered. Suzy eventually left teaching and focused on assisting in the raising of her grandchildren.

After 77 blessed years, Suzy completed her last season on Tuesday May 8, 2018 when her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ called her from labor to her reward. She leaves a rich heritage and loving memories in the hearts of her family and friends. Those who preceded her in death and who will meet her at the pearly gates include her beloved parents, four brothers, five sisters, and several beloved nieces, nephews, uncles, and aunts.

Suzy leaves to cherish her memories 4 Daughters, Elizabeth Lynette (Robert) Gunn, Chris Suzanne (Warren) Jones, Francine Mai Morris and Georgette E.
