Sylvester Berry,
Jr.
July 27, 1954 – March 3, 2020
On July 27 th , 1954, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sylvester Sr. and Anna Ruth welcomes a baby boy, Sylvester Jr. into this world. He was one of four children born into this union.
Sylvester attended Dunbar Elementary, Carver Jr High, and then on to the prestigious Booker T. Washington High School where he graduated with the class of 1972.
He was very popular and was one of the most notable quarterbacks for Booker T. It was there that he revolutionized the game with his side arm throw. He led the Hornets to the State Championship in 1971. They were tied with the number two spot in the nation that year. After graduation in 1972, he then committed to Oklahoma State University and later transferred to the University of Tulsa. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force where he also played football.
Sylvester, also known as Sly, Syl Jr, and Syl, was a jack of all trades. He had a love for fishing, old school music, and was a master DJ. He was someone who loved family and was notorious for bring the family together for barbeques and family outings. His favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys, and you better not say anything bad about them.
Syl Jr. was playful at heart and loved to tell scary stories to the children. He also loved to write. He published "Defacto Adjournment", in 2009 and was working on his second book. He was passionate about our youth. He spent years coaching youth football and made a big impact on several lives. He was a motivator, disciplinarian, protector, and a mentor to many.
Some of his work experiences included construction, restaurant management, and CNC machinist. He later retired from the City of Tulsa.
On March 3, 2020, he finished his course here on earth. He was proceeded in death by his father Sylvester Sr., his mother Anna Ruth, granddaughter Sharbre', and several other close relatives.
He leaves to cherish his memories, a special longtime friend, Jeri Howland. He noted that his foremost achievement was in raising his offspring to responsible adulthood; Sylvester III, Demeltria, Mark, Malcolm, Tiajuana, Matthew, and Joshua. He also leaves to mourn his sisters, Sylvia and Angela Chatman; his brothers, Jerome, Howard, Peeples, Marcus Sr, and Terry (Vicki), along with a host of other relatives and friends.
