Obituary

Dr. T. Oscar Chappelle, Jr., Pastor Emeritus of the Morning Star Baptist Church in Tulsa, left for Heaven's Reward on Thursday morning, January 4, 2008 from Tulsa.

Chappelle and his father, the Rev. T. Oscar Chappelle Sr., pastored Morning Star for a combined 64 years.

The younger Chappelle was born Oct. 7, 1942, in Tulsa and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He held an undergraduate degree from Langston University and a master's degree from the University of Tulsa.

He served in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division Band and married Janice Gwendolyn Webb on Aug. 15, 1970.

He taught school in Chicago and St. Louis before going into the ministry.

Chappelle was influential in his community and at the state and national levels of the National Baptist Church, the largest black denomination in the world.

He was president of the Oklahoma Baptist State Congress of Christian Education and first vice president of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education.

Chappelle received numerous awards and honors, including honorary doctoral degrees and being named one of the top 25 most outstanding pastors in America in 1974 by the Mid-Western Baptist Laymen's Fellowship.

He met with then-President Clinton in 1996.

In addition to co-pastoring with his father at Morning Star from 1970 to 1973 and from 1989 to 1990, he pastored a church in Okmulgee as well as Timothy Baptist Church in Tulsa.

Upon the death of his father on April 28, 1990, he became senior pastor at Morning Star, serving until his retirement in 2005.

Chappelle is survived by his wife, Janice Chappelle; a son, Thomas Oscar Chappelle III; a brother, Tulsa County Special Judge Carlos Chappelle; and one grandson.

The Tribute will be on Friday, January 11, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. in the Morning Star Baptist Church. Reverend Herbert Edmondson, III, Senior Pastor, Officiant and Reverend J. A. Reed, Jr., Senior Pastor of Fairview Baptist Church in Oklahoma City and President of Oklahoma Baptist State Convention, Eulogist. Entombment will follow the service in the Green Hill Cemetery Mausoleum in Sapulpa.

You may visit Dr. Chappelle, as he slumbers at the Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors, Inc., on Wednesday, from 3 PM to 7 PM and on Thursday from 10 AM to 7 PM, followed by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Omega Memorial Ceremony.
