Obituary

On August 2, 1921, a bouncing baby boy was delivered from Heaven to Armous and Corillis Wilson. They named him, Varnell. Varnell was educated in Northwest School in Okmulgee, OK, and accepted Christ at an early age. He joined the Northwest Chapel Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Roquemore. In December of 1939, he was united with Katherine Rentie for over 50 years, a marriage which was blessed with two children, Norma Helen, and Adolph

In 1951, Varnell and his family relocated to Kansas City, KS where he worked as a construction worker. He also was employed with the Kansas City Engraving Company, The Trinity Lutheran Hospital, and eventually retiring from the J.A. Bruening Company where he was employed for over 25 years. Mr. Wilson's compassion for community service was displayed when he was appointed to oversee the youth in the Summer Youth Work Program. He had an active role in several political campaigns; he was a member of the Kansas City Chapter of the NAACP, Progressive Democratic Club, Metro Trip Club, Widow's Person Services of Wyandotte County and former member of the King David Lodge of St. John Scottish Rites grand lodge AFAM Jurisdiction of Kansas City, KS Inc.

In 2002, he returned to Okmulgee and re-joined the Northwest Chapel Baptist Church and became a Deacon under the leadership of Pastor Leroy Crawford, where he served until his health began to fail. In the late afternoon of Saturday, August 5, 2006, Mr. Wilson answered his Master's Call. Varnell was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Nathaniel, SR., Lester, SR., Armous, JR., Curtis, and Freddy Lee Wilson, SR.

Remaining to join Mr. Wilson; daughter Norma and Willie Rivers, Oklahoma City, OK, and son Adolph and Lisa Wilson, Okmulgee, OK,; seven grandchildren, Joy Moody, Austin, TX, Lonell and Gwen Rivers, Douglasville, GA., Terry and Kasouja Rivers, Oklahoma City, OK., Curtis Wilson, Kansas City, KS., Clay and Tonya Rivers, Oklahoma City, OK., April Wilson, Arlington, TX., Melvin and Tammy Rivers, Oklahoma City, OK.; nine great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; four brothers; Wardell and Tommie Wilson, Kansas City, KS., Otis and Levesta Wilson, Carmon and Juanita Wilson, and Luther Wilson, all of Okmulgee, OK, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.


Services will be at the Northwest Chapel Baptist Church in Okmulgee, OK, Saturday, August 12, 2006 at 10 o'clock in the morning. Friends may visit Mr. Wilson at The Chapel of Peace in Okmulgee from Noon until 7:00 P.M.
