Today, we celebrate the life of Velma Jean Williams McGee
This is her story…
As winter waned and spring quietly arrived, Velma Jean began her beautiful journey through life. Born on February 13, 1939, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, she was the third beloved child of Elisha and Ida Mae Traylor.
From an early age, Velma was instilled with profound values: a heart full of love, compassion for her neighbors, respect for all and unwavering faith in God. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior in her youth, and her faith remained steadfast throughout her life. Her spiritual foundation was St. Andrew Baptist Church, where she worshipped faithfully for many years. Her children fondly recall countless Sunday mornings spent in this sacred space.
Velma's educational journey began at Northwest School System in Okmulgee. After relocating to Tulsa, she attended Carver Junior High and later became a proud Booker T. Washington Hornet, graduating with the Class of 1958. During her tenure as class president, she played a vital role in keeping her classmates connected. She enjoyed helping organize events and reunions, celebrating the enduring bonds they shared.
Love found Velma in a moment she described as "love at first sight" when she met Ervin Leroy Robert Williams during her graduation. Their hearts united in marriage on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1960. Together, they were blessed with five beautiful children, each deeply cherished. Years later, Velma found love again and married John McGee Jr. on December 6, 1991.
Velma's heart was as generous as it was kind. She freely gave of herself by helping wherever, whenever, and however she was needed. Her dedication was evident in her 16 years of service at McDonnell Douglas and in the love and care she extended to her elderly neighbors, always ensuring they were safe and well.
Her circle of close friends also referred to as her "girlfriend group" was a source of laughter, love, dancing, and unwavering support. Together, they shared life's highs and lows, lifting each other with joy and compassion. Their bond was unbreakable, and their cherished memories will forever live in the hearts of all who knew them.
Velma possessed a rare gift which was the ability to make everyone she met feel truly special.
