Obituary

"Her Story"
On January 8, 1935, D.J. James and Mae Thornton gave birth to a bouncing baby girl in Dilworth, Texas. They named their seventh child, and fifth girl born to the family, Vera Mae. Vera Mae James grew up in Itasca, Texas, also known as "The Big Little Town." There, she accepted Christ and was baptized at age 12 at Second Baptist Church where she attended Sunday School, and B.Y.P.U. She attended elementary school at Booker T. Washington and went on to graduate with honors from Jeanette Sanford High School. She would later graduate from Cresent Beauty School in Austin, Texas, receiving her cosmetology license in 1954, and went on to be employed at Georgia's Beauty Salon in Itasca, Texas. She also received her hair weaving certificate.

Vera Mae married Willie Chester Kennard and their union produced one child: Joslyn Renae. Vera enjoyed doing crafts, writing poems and helping others. Her specialty was making dolls out of unusual things like such as bottles. She was a person whom loved her family, and everyone else as well. She truly treasured her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. On August 6, 2010, Vera Mae Kennard departed this life and went into Eternal Rest. He only child, and best friend Joslyn Renae, father D.J. James, mother Mae Eliza Thornton-James, three brothers: Douglas, Earnest and Henry, two sisters: Annie Johnson and Georgia Williams, two great grandsons: Willie Ray Jr. and Purpose Kennard preceded her in death.

Remaining to cherish her precious memories: two loving granddaughters: Dedra Robison (Richard), Dana Walker (Willie Ray, Sr.) both of Tulsa, OK., one grandson, Devin Walker (Lynette), Baltimore, MD., two great-granddaughters: LaJahnee Mahoney, Tulsa, OK., and Devionna Walker, Baltimore, MD., two great-grandsons: Larry Pearson, and Cordae Robison, both of Tulsa, OK., one God-son, Kevin Ward, Snyder, TX., God-daughters: Brenda, Delores, Temple, TX., Tara, Tulsa, OK., and Jaquiline, Texas, sisters: Ola Lee Wilson (Tommy) Hale Center, TX., Gladys Jackson, Itasca, TX., Norvilene Vaughn (Charles) Owasso, OK., a special friend William Abair, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Services for Vera Kennard are Saturday August 14, 2010 at 10AM at First Baptist Church North Tulsa located at 1414 North Greenwood. Visitation will be Thursday from 12Noon to 7PM.
