Vernon S. G. Billups, Sr., was born to Gaza Lee Vann and Murphy T. Billups on August 13, 1930 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma. He was raised and attended school in Red Bird, Oklahoma, graduating in 1946.
Mr. Billups moved to Tulsa and began a career in Auto Mechanics. He worked for American Airlines as an Aircraft Mechanic for over 27 years before his retirement.
Vernon married Delores Ann Ragsdale and raised four children from that union. This marriage was later dissolved. In 1975, he married Mattye Jordan, uniting her seven children with his from both previous marriages. In 1988, together, they became guardians of two grandchildren, Hope and LaDamian Evans.
Vernon was baptized and attended First Baptist Church in Red Bird, serving the Lord faithfully as a Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent and also in the Choir. Vernon had an outgoing personality and never met a stranger. His family and friends will always cherish his memory.
In his 83rd year, Vernon S. G. Billups, Sr., was beaconed by the Master on Wednesday morning, April 16, 2014. He was preceded in death by parents, a brother, M. T. Billups; a sister, Edwina Billups; his sons, Vernon "Buster" Billups, Jr., Murphy Billups and Reginald Evans; his grandson, Marc Williams; and his daughters, Robyn Evans and Cheryl Evans.
He leaves in God's care; his loving wife, Mattye Billups; his daughers, Deborah Cayasso [Kerry], Beverly Williams [John], Jacqueline Love [Cornelius], Jocelyn Evans Palmer [Walter], and Felisa Singleton; his sons, Richard Evans [Rita] and Virgil Charles; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
The Hour of Tribute will commence on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. in the First Baptist Church of Red Bird. His Pastor, Reverend William T. Janey, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Vann Cemetery.
