IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Vernon L.
"Mr. Bootsie" Logan
May 19, 1937 – March 21, 2025
Mr. Vernon Logan, affectionally referred to as "Mr. Bootsie" was the only child born to Minerva Ingram in Muskogee (Crecola), Oklahoma. He was raised in a loving home by his grandparents, Millard and Ora (Shipp) Ingram, surrounded by his aunts and uncles whom he considered siblings. During the time he was in Crecola, he worked on the farm alongside his uncles, growing seasonal crops. He loved riding his horse "Red" every day. Vernon gained lots of knowledge in agriculture while attending Black Jack School.
He enjoyed attending his school and occasionally going to visit his friends in Summit at DuBois Elementary. At the age of nine, Vernon had to temporarily leave the farm, school, and his friends to move to St. Louis, Missouri with his mother, Minerva and his dad, Jacob Jones, Jr. It was a very difficult move for him leaving the only home he knew. While in St. Louis, he traveled to many places on the train with his daddy. He enjoyed this experience but missed his home and family in Oklahoma. Later, his parents moved to Wichita, Kansas. This was a great move because he was closer to his home town. In Wichita, Vernon was able to come home to Crecola every summer and some weekends to work on the farm and to visit family and friends.
He attended Tabernacle Baptist Church attending services with his mother and daddy. He was a member of a Musical group called the "Brotherhood". He loved singing and often talked about his adventures as a 15 year old travelling with the group across the country. He attended Wichita East High school focusing his studies on auto mechanics and tailoring. He felt blessed that his school offered vocational classes. He also excelled in Football and Track. After high school, Vernon traveled back and forth from the farm to Wichita. While in Wichita, he was introduced to a young lady from Muskogee, Oklahoma, Rena Branch. The two, who were very young dated, fell in love and eventually married November 25, 1956 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. The couple lived in Wichita, welcoming their oldest daughter Karen and son Dwayne into the family. Vernon helped out with his parents BBQ business and also worked for a while at Boeing in the food service division. This gave him a greater love for cooking.
He decided to move his family to San Diego, California for a better life. He journeyed there seeking employment. Soon as he got off the bus, he immediately started working for someone. After working for a period of time, his wife and children moved there. In San Diego, two more children were welcomed into the family, Vernon Jr. and his baby girl, Trisha. He worked many hours at various jobs. He worked maintenance at Newberry Department Store, worked as a mechanic at Sears, did some tailoring and various other jobs. Then, Vernon decided to fulfill his dreams and open up his own business. He owned and operated Vern's Automotive. He was a master transmission, brake and motor mechanic. He also could do body work, repair and restore old cars. He enjoyed seeing his children excel and attend higher education. He wasn't home as much as he wished, but he had a love for his family and wanted only the best for them. After many years, his marriage to Rena was dissolved and he moved to Los Angeles, California. There, he worked various jobs so that he could move his parents to California to help them have a better life and to be near them. This was great for many years until his dad became ill and died in 1991. In 1991, Vernon came to Muskogee (Summit) to bury his daddy. While in Summit, he sat in his car on a corner all night just thinking what he could do with that old building he was sitting by. He was always thinking and planning. During his stay in Muskogee, he went on a blind date and met Paulette Hickman Vann. They talked the whole evening and decided to see each other the next day. Before leaving Muskogee, he secured his friendship with Paulette and they stayed in touch daily. Also, he was able to purchase that corner building. Vernon came back to fulfill his dream at that corner building. He and his mother moved back, providing her with a home and a place to continue her BBQ business. In 1992, Vernon was operating a convenience store, a restaurant and an auto mechanic shop. While in Summit, he joined First Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, became a Deacon and did a few building projects for the church. Even with all of these businesses, he always found the time to shop at clothing stores, auto parts stores and his favorite hangout...Lowes.
He was quite the builder and shopper! In 2020, things began to change for Vernon health wise. In 2021 "Bootsies" Restaurant was closed and the main focus was on Vernon's health. Vernon Loved big and he knew he was loved by Paulette, his family and many friends. Vernon closed his eyes in sweet Peace on March 21, 2025, in his home with his loving family near his side..
