Warnetta Bolton Barnett was born in Oak Grove Community of Wyvark, OK on May 18, 1925. She was the third of eleven children born to Otto Bolton, Sr., and Grace S. Bell Bolton. Her parents, four sisters, four brothers, husband and step-son preceded her in death.
At the Age of 9, her family joined Oak Grove A.M.E. Church, where she was taught and nurtured. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Wagoner, OK.. She matriculated in institutions of higher learning earning an Associate Degree in Nursing from Claremore Junior College and later attending the University of Tulsa and Baptist University. Her focus was adult and elderly care.
Warnetta was married to the late Benny L. Barnett, Sr., for over 40 years. Because of the serious illness of her husband, her career came to an abrupt halt. She retired from Tulsa Public Schools and later worked as a Senior Companion.
Warnetta was a devoted member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Tulsa, OK for over 50 years having served in many capacities of the church as: Vice-Chair of the Steward Board, a Class Leader, President of the Senior Choir, Public Relations Director, Chairperson for the Outreach Program-Humanitarian Awards Banquet for over 18 years, and a loyal member of both the local Lay Organization and Women's Missionary Society.
Sis. Barnett was a dedicated member of the Central Northeast Oklahoma Conference Lay Organization serving in many capacities on all levels. She served as a Delegate to (12) General Conferences of the AME Church from 1964 – 2008.
She also was a faithful member of the Women's Missionary Society on all levels serving in many capacities (1st Vice-President, Secretary, Parliamentarian, Area Chairperson, Public Relations Director). Sis. Warnetta also served as a Delegate to (12) Quadrennial Session of the WMS from 1967–2007. She became a Life Member of the WMS in 1996.
Her Community Activities include Election Board worker, Church Women United, Senior Companions, Volunteer for the Adult Daycare, participated with Christmas Holiday Food Drive and for over 10 years, was the chairperson for the Tulsa MLK Commemorative Breakfast as well as a member of the MLK Commemorative Society.
She departed this life on Thursday, February 25, 2010 in Tulsa, OK and leaves to cherish her memory: (2) sisters: Rudene Stephenson of Okay, Oklahoma and Geneva Warren of Tulsa, OK; (1) brother: Kenneth Bolton of Buffalo, NY; (1) daughter-in-law: Melvaline; (8) grandchildren: Shamika, Q.T., Christie, Angela, Yvette, Yvonne, LaDonna and Kevin; a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
The Tribute will be on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 12 Noon in the Sanctuary of the St. Paul AME Church, 46th and Hartford in Tulsa. Reverend Dr. Wayne Johnson, Pastor, will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery at Gibson Station, Oklahoma.
