Obituary

Mr. Wesley "Afro" Colbert

Wesley Colbert affectionately known as "Afro" passed away on September 30, 2022, in his 72 nd Season. He was born into life on February 8, 1950, to the parents of L.T. Colbert, Sr. and Delorise Colbert in Okmulgee, OK.

Afro attended Dunbar High School and then relocated to Kansas City, MO in 1972. In 1977, Afro met the love of his life, Ms. Lisa Johnson and they married on August 26, 1978; that union of 45 years lasted until his death. In 1982, as a product of Afro and Lisa's love, they welcomed their only child together, TeRena. After 20+ years of living in Kansas City, MO, Afro and Lisa decided to leave the "big city life" and return to Afro's humble roots in Okmulgee, OK, so he could reunite and be close to his family. Afro was employed at Anchor Glass Container Corporation in Henryetta, OK for 9 ½ years, before taking an early retirement due to a back injury.

Afro was a very humble and God-fearing man. Although he was a man a few words, when he spoke, you wanted to hear what he had to say. Afro was a true family man, and he gave his life to Christ in March 2010; where he served at Pilgrim Baptist Church in the Brotherhood Ministry and Choir, until the Lord called him home. Afro was a simple man who enjoyed spending time at home, cruisin' in his Classic "Nasty 67" Chevy, listening to his oldie's soul-town music, watching sports (KC Chiefs Fan), talking on his CB radio, bowling, taking care of his cattle, and spending quality time with his family and friends. Afro was loved and respected by many people, known for his "beaming" smile and caring heart.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, L.T. Colbert, Sr., and Delorise Colbert, his brother, L.T. Colbert, Jr. and his son, Cleon Colbert.

Afro leaves to mourn his passing, his beloved wife Lisa Colbert, his sister-in-law, Carla Johnson of Kansas City, MO, his loving daughters, Sandra Kay Thompson of Okmulgee, OK, Sharon Herndon of Dallas, TX, Lesley Byers of Kansas City, MO, TeRena Colbert of Frisco, TX and his goddaughter, Traneen Roath of Kansas City, MO. His sisters, Ruth Mitchell, Lula Tucker (Albert), Lois Hammon (J.D.), Shirley Colbert, Terrina Alexander, all of Okmulgee, OK and Eileen Murdock (Darryl) of Broken Arrow, OK. His brothers, Nathaniel Colbert, Bobby Colbert, Sr., Ray Colbert (Diane), all of Okmulgee, OK and Theodore "Ted" Tate (Zelma) of Tulsa, OK. His grandchildren, Tim Thompson, Jr. (Stephanie), DeMarqus Herndon, Tiffany Thompson (Dylan), Marquis Byers; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
