IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Willis Harris,
Jr.
November 8, 1928 – May 13, 2020
Willis J. Harris, Jr., the youngest of his siblings, was born on November 8, 1928, in Bixby, OK, to the late Willis J. Harris, Sr., and Hannah Hamlet Harris. On May 13, 2020, however, God called Willis to his heavenly home.
Willis spent his early years with the family in the Mounds, OK, and Beggs, OK, areas. He spent his late teens in the Snake Creek Community/Bixby and in Wichita, KS.
Willis relocated to Tulsa, OK, in the 1950s and was united in marriage to Wilma Jean Grubbs for more than 50 years. To this union were born four children. The family lived in north Tulsa, where Willis resided for over 55 years. He was gainfully employed at Yuba Heat and Oklahoma Steel for many years until his retirement in the early 1990s.
Willis, known affectionately by many as "Junior", accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Pettie Chapel CME Church in Bixby, OK. He later joined Holsey Chapel C.M.E. Church and served faithfully for many years. Later on, he united with Greater St. John A.M.E. Church, where he proudly served as an Usher.
Willis loved his family and made sure he provided them his own brand of entertainment at family gatherings. He attended every "Harris Family Reunion", which has been ongoing annually for many years. He also enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially football. His favorite NFL team was the Dallas Cowboys. He spent the better part of his retirement days repairing washers and dryers, watching Judge Judy on TV, and talking on the phone every day to his brother and best friend, Rev. W. B. Harris! Additionally, he enjoyed hanging out and telling jokes with his longtime friends at his favorite stomping grounds of Stutts House of Bar-B-Q and Evelyn's Soul Food Restaurant.
Having answered God's call and eased into eternal rest, Willis was preceded in death by his parents, Willis J. Harris, Sr., and Hannah Harris; his daughters, Katie Mae Cohens, Helen Smith, and Rennetta Harris Boyd; and his siblings, brother, Cleaven Cooks, and sisters, Bessie Miller, Dealie Johnson, Marline Dates, Juanita Lacy, and Nellie Robinson.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his brother, Rev. W. B. Harris (Wanda); his sons, Kenneth Harris (Tonya) of Tulsa, OK, Nathaniel Harris of Grand Prairie, TX, and Larry Lewis of Tulsa, OK; and his daughters, Gloria Harris Charles (Randy) of Highland Village, TX, and Sherron Price (Floyd) and Shonne Marshall, both of Tulsa, OK. Willis also leaves behind a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.
